RCSL: A Snapshot of Service in 2015-16

A Snapshot of Service in 2015-16

Let’s reflect on the year and how #FresnoStateServes.

It felt like it was just yesterday that our Richter Center Student Leaders gathered around the picnic tables outside the educational building at Scout Island to meet each other for the first time. Many of us were excited for the school year together, some of us were nervous about what each event would look like, but we were committed to this new team.

We would soon discover that our similarities outweigh our differences, and our shared passion for service made the work thoroughly enjoyable. This is just a snapshot of what our 27 Richter Center Student Leaders were able to accomplish over the course of the year.

  1. In honor of Giving Tuesday, Fresno State is adopting a Make-A-Wish Central California child's wish to go to Walt Disney World to meet Elsa from "Frozen." Summer was just six years old, in June 2014, when she had what her parents thought was a bout of flu. She eventually went to the hospital for dehydration where was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Her wish granters describe her as having the sweetest personality a 7-year-old could have. And after listening to Summer sing them "Let It Go" from "Frozen," it was no surprise to hear her ask for a trip to Walt Disney World to meet Elsa in person. 15. But we don’t do this just for us – As student leaders, we want to amplify the voices of our community partners and nurture the culture of service at Fresno State. Every year for the past six years, our University has contributed over 1 millions hours of service, and RCSL is one piece of that story.
  16. Over 1,400 campus volunteers raised a record $47,630.47 on March 8 for Valley Children’s Hospital Kids Day, with the Army ROTC finishing as the top selling student organization. Not only that, volunteers across the Valley set a record for total funds raised with $591,559.
  17. Twenty students and three faculty members traveled to Naboutini, Fiji in January-and what an experience. It certainly transformed the lives of many, including myself. Ambassador Toushulong says it best in his blog post, “The people of Naboutini have taught me about life, people, and love…We had come to the village feeling like strangers, but we left as members of the community village that taught us more then we will ever know.”
  18. We don’t underestimate the value of learning in service and the way service empowers a student to become a leader in their community. Each time we engage in meaningful work, our connections expand and it causes our hearts to contract. Here is a snapshot of Fresno State students in action and reflections of their volunteer experiences:

  20. "Experiencing [Sierra Foothill Conservancy] for the first time was great! The staff were super friendly and the overall experience was awesome. I was not prepared to hike, but it was worth it because the views were amazing. The work wasn't super intense either (at least for what my group did)"—SERVE committee leader, Kelli #FresnoStateServes

  23. Words cannot express the amount of gratitude I have for this amazing team of people and experience! From Lowell, to David, to Ludie, to my supportive advisor Marina, I would not have been able to lead a successful service project without the help of these hardworking mentors! And a special Thank You to my hardworking, enthusiastic Team Members who allowed me to grow with them as a Team Leader and put on a successful STEM Camp that the kids will always remember! This journey has been very rewarding, especially this week, as all the hard work is finally paid off! I would not have wanted to spend my Spring Break any other way! 😊👍🐾#ProudTeamLeader #ASBeTheChange #TeamStoneSoup #StoneSoupFresno #stonesoup #AlternativeSpringBreak #FresnoStateServes

The Richter Center Ambassadors also held the first-ever National Volunteer Week, April 11-14. Students came by to share where they served, what they learned from volunteering, hear about how Fresno State is committed to service, and write a thank you card to a volunteer! Our social media campaign allowed students to share with their friends and network a meaningful anecdote about being a volunteer.

Giving up time to help others and serve them has taught me that there is a community out there that's just for YOU. @mylgbtplus has been a huge influential organization that has helped me become more connected with my LGBT+ community. 😁 #fresnostateserves #fresnostate #lgbtplus

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.”
